Get Your Rocks Off

Work hard, play hard … and come and ”get your rocks off honey, shake it now now, get ‘em off downtown” … or in this case, at Yardley Gobion Recreation Centre from 25 – 27 May 2012 for this year’s Rock it For Willen event. You love music? You love fun? Then you’re just gonna love this …

c'mon and rock out with us - get the date in your diary

This is Rock It For Willen’s third year; the 2010 and 2011 events were awesome and raised over £7000 for Milton Keynes’ charity Willen Hospice and this year we’re aiming for more bands, more people, more fun and … yes you’ve guessed it … more money. Much!

I understand that it can sometimes be an irritant that it’s tempting to ignore when so many people are doing so many things for so many charities. This is different. We’re not asking you to hand over your hard earned cash and carry on walking. We’re asking you to join us for a weekend of fun and frolics at Milton Keynes’ finest mini-festi; the City’s music scene is rocking and revellers are never short of great gigs to attend from some talented musicians every weekend. We’re bringing over 20 bands together for one weekend and they’re all playing for you for free as their contribution to the charity.

We have the likes of The Lockdown Band, Peartree Bridge Family, Big Cheeze, Southside Jimmy, Sarah Chappell, Mad Mods and Englishmen, Punkholics, Trouble With Tuesday, No Hot Ashes and Spaced Out to name just a few – take a look at the line up. The event is managed by the infamous Paul Hockenhull of Bad News Promotions and is sponsored by some great people, all giving their services for free, including Marshall Amps, Rock Hard Music, Adixtion Music, and Faz Colbhie Limited.

Saturday will see a guest appearance from Gilly Giddings, performing the Willen Hospice charity single “I’ll Be There”, by local songwriter John Hawkes. You can hear a clip of the song here. Gilly brings a very different sound to the weekend and the tune will be on sale all weekend with every penny from the proceeds going to the charity and if you can’t wait until then, you can purchase it here.

As well as great music we have entertainment, stalls, fire swinging (yip, that’ll be me with paraffin and fire chains, I’m in training as I like a challenge!) and lots, lots more. There’s a bar onsite and plenty of nosh too.

You’re probably wondering how you can contribute, right? Firstly, you can come along! There’s camping on site with a charge of just £10 per pitch for the weekend. You can give generously whilst you’re there by emptying your pockets into the buckets which the Bad News team will be shaking. Now here’s the thing. We’ll be running an auction on the Sunday and we need stuff please! If you’re a local business person or an international corporate, please consider how you can help. Do you offer a service which you could donate to the highest bidder? We’re open to offers here and we’re thinking laterally – remember that we have hundreds of people attending and someone out there will be happy to raise their hand for something you can give! Does your business have a product that it can donate? We can’t raise funds for the charity without your help – yes, yours!

Willen Hospice is a registered charity that provides specialist care for people whose illness no longer responds to curative treatment (also known as specialist palliative care). Willen Hospice specialise in four areas: specialist symptom control, emotional support, spiritual support and care for carers. They provide outreach support to Milton Keynes, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire.

Most of us think we’re invincible and that illness only happens to other people; Gods and Universe willing, it won’t happen to you. Or me. However what if it does? Or someone close to you? You want to feel reassured in the knowledge that there’s the opportunity to get the best possible care in what will often be terrifying and traumatic circumstances for both the patient and their family. Less than 23% of Willen Hospice’s costs are met by the NHS – the rest is made up from fundraising. At risk of sounding a little morbid and dramatic, one day it could be you or someone you love needing their care; so c’mon people – please help!!

If you’d like to know more about how you can contribute, please call me on +44 (0) 7932 060360 or email me me and we look forward to seeing you there!

Be outstanding …
